Anti-LGBT Hate On Display In New York

We begin with an arson attack on a pro-LGBT church:

A newly installed rainbow-painted bench at the First Presbyterian Church — signifying the church’s openness toward the gay and lesbian community — was intentionally set on fire early Monday morning, a church official said.

The Rev. Laurena M. Wickham Will, the church pastor, said members of the Ogdensburg Fire Department put out the flames at 3:06 a.m.

“It’s shocking. Heartbreaking,” Mrs. Will said. “I can tell you that someone who is very angry did something very hurtful here.”

However, the perpetrator has been caught:

A 47-year-old man charged with committing a hate crime by burning a rainbow-colored bench said that he burned the bench to "send it back to hell."

"The reaction I had to it practically knocked me off my bike. It brought back every single memory from the time I had been molested from the time I was 8 years old, on into the time I was 14 years old," his statement read.

And now, probably even more disturbing despite the lack of physical violence:

Anti-gay fliers were distributed throughout sections of Jackson Heights over the weekend.

On Monday some could still be found on car windows along 82nd Street near the intersection of 34th Avenue.

The fliers, written in English and Spanish, quote Romans 1:18-32, which in part reads:

“Men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error… deserve to die.”

Councilman Daniel Dromm, a key figure in the LGBT movement, said it was disturbing that the fliers were being distributed.

“It is deplorable and disgusting,” he said. “It’s wrong and needs to be condemned.”

What could be the reason for this? Could it have anything to do with all the hate that has been stirred up by Davis and Huckabee and like-minded ilk recently? Yes, coincidences do happen. But it is also much more likely that someone has enough hate to go through with this bullshit if an event like that occurs.

When someone from our side launches an arson attack on a anti-LGBT church and distributes flyers calling for opponents of marriage equality to be executed, maybe I'll reconsider. Until then, conservatives, shut the fuck up about how victimized you and you alone are. Nobody cares! (- Jon Stewart)
