Many of you have seen this video in earlier incarnations, but the track is brand new.
When I started the new record this summer, I knew I wanted to include a fresh, acoustipunk version of “God Hates Flags.” The rise of uber-nationalism throughout the West, and its marriage to the most un-Christian religious nutto movements, begged for a re-introduction of this anti-bigotry anthem.
Now, with the impending ascendance of our Beloved Leader Him Dong Self and his goose-stepping minions, I can’t think of a better time to reiterate my repugnance of bright, shiny boot fetishists and the banners they wave.
I was incredibly fortunate to be joined on the cut by the wonderful guitarist Clay Parker and the brilliant author and musician Beth Patterson on bouzouki. (“Brilliant,” in Beth’s case, is not hyperbole. When I asked her to cut on the song, she wrote a part consisting of three national anthems transposed to minor. The woman's scary smart.)
With the resulting track and higher-resolution footage than the original versions, “God Hates Flags” is louder, sharper, and more necessary than ever.
Enjoy.
(Again, my apologies for the advert. Think of it as the world’s smallest tip jar, filled with teeny tiny slivers of pennies. Hey, the last vid’s actually made 93 cents!)
